What are Images of the Church, and Why Do We Have Them? Images of the Church are images used to explain the teaching of the church, it help us to understand our communion with both God in “Father, Son and Holy Spirit” and the people around us (Ave Maria Press 23).
This is so that by connecting with the father, son, and spirit, we live like him and be like him to be the best possible being that we can be. Images of the church are like metaphors used to explain and show the mystery of God by showing us his intimate relation with the church (Sancta Dei Activitas) which then conveys these to us during communion. “One God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4:6), God is is everything and this quote tells us that he is in many things and depicted in different ways. These images of him and the church help us to understand him.
The images are present throughout the old and New Testament and there main purpose is to show us what the church teaches and why it teaches it.What does the Church teach about my assigned image of the church? The image assigned to me was The City of God, this image portrays the church and is the church itself. The church teaches us that The City of God is the place where God rests and were salvation takes place, it is a place of total holiness where you and God are intimate because he is in the church with you (Sancta Dei Activitas). “There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, The holy dwelling places of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.” (Psalm 46:4-5) This quote explains that the City of God is a grand place in the most high place. It also says that “God is in the midst of her” which means that God is the the church and that he is in it. “The Church as the Body of Christ is the most complete image.”(Ave Maria Press 23) This quote tells us that Christ is the church, his body is the church because it is all based on him.
How has the Church acted like this image during a particular event within the history of the church?A time when the Church has acted like the City of Church is every time there is a Mass. This is because during Mass you are submitting yourself to god by worshipping him and becoming almost linked to him in an intimate way, therefore every time the church has a mass you are in the city of God. “The church of Christ transcends human imagination.” (Sancta Dei Activitas) This means that during Church you are almost transported into another world where imagination is possible, this is what the City of God is because in there you are free. “Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets’; (Luke 13:26) , in this quote we can see that God is with is and in our presence during mass because he is the church. The Catholic Church is the body of Christ because God is the head of it (Ave Maria Press 22).How can a school-appropriate secular song or piece of art illustrate this image of the church? At school a Piece of art to illustrate the City of God could be a chapel because, like a church it is the City of God.
Another example could be a cross or a pig tire of God because by having him with us, it exposes us to his constant kindness and love which is what City Of God conveys as Gods message is spread through the church or a something that could represent the idea of church. “Real Presence. Jesus’ presence in the Church is a great blessing and privilege for all Catholics.” (Ave Maria Press 21).
Real presence is the representation of God through the Eucharist, this way we are exposed to his love as his followers. “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually members of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:27) this quote signifies the importance of the city of God and why it’s is important for schools to have it because by going to church, you are now a part of God and his mission individually. “In the future city of God, New Jerusalem, God Himself will dwell with mankind” (Sancta Dei Activitas) Here the quote tells us how God lives in the City of God therefore, if we have and example in our school for example we can live and be with God everyday to help us. How can this Image of the Church teach a valuable lesson to modern day society? The image of the City of God can teach modern day society that God is always with up you because we are in his City when we worship him. We enter into him and become his loyal followers once we fully submit to God. “The Church is where you are able to be with Jesus and, in turn, be sent out by him as his his follower.” (Ave Maria Press 22) as this quote says the City of God, which is the Church is the place where you are with Jesus and so that is the place where you fully learn the most because you are learning to love someone who has and will always love you like his child.
“In earth, church is the place where Jesus Christ, the Mediator, makes salvation accessible in various ways and grants fellowship with God” (Sancta Dei Activitas) Jesus grants you salvation because he forgives you and loves you and therefore teaches us that we should love everyone because his City is on Earth to help us and to guide us through life. “For the love of Christ controls us.” (2 Corinthians 5:14) Gods love guards us and what it, we are able to do marvelous things with our life. The City of God teaches us to love God and everyone in the world because it is there to guide us into a life filled with love and glory.
