The music industry has a plethora of
different avenues and pathways to chose from. This rages from setting up live
performances right to managing royalties and copyright. needless to say the
music industry is a very diverse place. The main music industry has 4 sections
these are Live performance, Record companies, music publishing and artist
management. So now we know what the main industry are what do they do?

live performances

To have a successful concert you need
people to watch and show up. This means that someone has to let people know
that a concert is happening the job of this falls onto the promoter. The job of
a promoter is to get the word out to the target audience. Promoters are in charge of promoting the
show/event. They work with agents, or in some cases, directly with the bands,
and with clubs and concert venues to arrange for a show to take place. Dera
Shelton who is a successful music promoter said that “You should promote
events as soon as a show is booked” This shows the importance of promoting a
show. Dear also encouraged artist to “use all promotional tools available,
including social media to hit the target audience. Using this strategy helps
insure that as many people as possible know about the show. Using social media
marketing also helps to target a certain demographic and target audience because
you can post directed content.

Setting up

When putting on a big event you need
people to set up the venue e.g setting up the
stage, lights and speakers. This is where people like Jake berry who s a
production director, his job is to insure that everything runs smoothly and
everything is setup on time. A production manager is in charge of the setting
up of the show. “every show starts with the production manager, who then hires
his people to put the show together” which was said by Tom Maunger who was the
head rigger on the MDNA tour. This comment shows the importance of a production
manager because with out them no one would have any direction.

Health and safety

Health and safety is a very important part of a live
performance. It is the job of the event manager to organise the health and
safety and to insure that the show is safe for everyone involved. When planning
a event one may refer to the health and safety guide. The guide aims to help
those who organise music events so that the events run safely. This can range
from fire exits to bomb threats. Monona Rossol (The author of the health and
safety guide) said Good health and said that good health and safety is the most
important thing when organising an event. A health and safety manager would
cover areas like risk assessment, public liability insurance, food and hygiene
and many more.

Tour and event management

tour/event managers manage the whole event and insure that
they runs smoothly.  An example of a tour
manager is live nation.Live Nation is an American live-events company based in
Beverly Hills, California, focused on worldwide concert and entertainment-show
promotions. The job of a event manager is very broad so it is normally
directed into different subsections.

– Retailing

The job of someone in retail is to sell
the artists merchandise with is  normally
hoodies, t-shirts, mugs ect. A lot of artists and promoters  stress the importance of merch. However
others disagree. Marketing guru sam day says that unless the artists has a
reliable and established fanbase then selling
merchandise wold be a waste of time and money.  There is also many catalyst which can affect
the process of ticket sales. In recent years the number of horrific terror
attacks have increased this makes the risk of going to a concert high which
means that a lot of people don’t want to go. Music journalist said in an
interview that ” a lot of people are going to get rid of their tickets to these
events” due to ti the resent increase in risk.

When putting on a concert you need to be
able to separate the people who ae spouses to be there and the people who are
not. Most(if not all) live concerts have a sort of ticket system, whether this
is a wristband, digital ticket or physical ticket. The people in charge of
ticket make sure that you have the valid documentation to enter.

when putting on  a live show the people backstage insure that
everything is running smoothly behind the Curtin. People who work back stage
may have the job of directing the performer to the main stage and setting up
the dressing room.

– Front of house

In music a front of house is normally in
charge of direct monitoring from the stage to the audience. An example of a
front of house is Jim ebdon. Jim is the front of house for maroon 5 and has
been in the industry for over 30 years. The job of a for is to insure quality
sound is reaching the audience at all times.A front of house can also be a
person who deals with all the admin . Google describes it as The ‘front-of-house’ of a theatre refers
to all areas accessed by the public, including the auditorium.Front of house staff look after the public to make sure
their visit is safe and enjoyable

– Preforming  rights

It is also the job of a events manager
to manage the rights of the performer. It is likely that the manager would work
with companies like The performers rights society to insure the artists rights
are met. Prs is the
UK’s leading collection society, bringing together two collection societies:
the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) and the Performing Right
Society. The law protects music rights. This mans anywhere that plays
music in a public pace normally need to obtain a licence from  both prs and ppl. Even though the two
companies are similar there is a major difference between them. Prs collects
and distributes royalties on behalf of the song writers and composers and ppl
collects and distributes royalties on behalf of the record companies and
artists. Both of these services are extremely crucial to a fully functioning
music industry. Artists such as such as tabor swift have made it clear how they
feel about

Record companies

A record label or record company is a brand or trademark
associated with the marketing of music recordings and music videos. However
with the rise of the internet it is easier than ever to be a success full
independent artist with no major label backing.

major vs minor record labels

There are two types of record companies, Major and inde labels.A
major record label is one of the 3 main record labels
which own 80% of the worlds music. These companies are universal, sony and
Warner Music Group. Owning 28% of the worlds music, universal is the biggest
record company in the world. universal has some of the biggest names ever
signed to them including Kanye West, prince, queen And Jay z. Major record
labels may own a lot of the industry, however with the new age of technology
there has been an increase in the amount of index record labels. index or independent  record labels are labels that have no
major label backing. One of the biggest examples of an inde record label is xl
records. xl now boasts artists
like Radio head, giggs and even recording sensation Adel.

it’s a record companies job to sign the
newest and hottest artists and to support them and the let
them gown. record labels use A to find new talent. A or (artist
and repertoire)
is the division of a record label that is responsible for talent scouting and overseeing the artistic
development of recording artists and songwriters. Successful a says “i
look through 2 to 3,000 bands a week but out of that there is only 1 band that
i really like ” This shows the sheer amount of people that an A sees on
anyone day but it
also shows how slim of a chance it is to get recognised. A are the
heartbeat of any great record company because they keep recruit new talent for
the company which ultimately ends in more money for the company.

acts and material

When a artists is signed to a record label they would (more
times than not) give up the rights to their music. This means the label would
own the rights to all the music that you make in the time that you are signed
to them. a lot of artists dislike the process of the music industry and plenty
of the worlds most famous artists have had troubles with their contracts
including prince, dr. dre, n sync and even the king of pop Micheal Jackson.

Micheal was even quoted saying “The recording companies
really, really do conspire against the artists — they steal, they cheat, they
do everything they can”. Despite the fact there is no shortage of artists that
didn’t like their contracts plenty of artists extremely
enjoyed heir time at their labels. Even though a lot of deals only include the
music side of an artists career, in recent years we have seen a increase in the
360 deal.n the music industry, a 360 deal  is a business relationship
between an artist and a music industry company where the company agrees to
provide financial and other support for the artist, including direct advances as
well as support in marketing, promotion, touring and other areas. In turn, the
artist agrees to give the company a percentage of an increased number of their
revenue streams, often including sales of recorded music, live performances,
publishing and more.

Artists use recording studios to make their
music. A recording studio is one of the fundamental parts of the music
industry, without a recording studio artists would not be able to record their
songs. The best out expensive recording studios are general used by the
bigger artists. Studios like abbey road studios and the dungeon are used for some of the
worlds best artists and musicians. However with modern
technology it is easier than ever to make a quality recording
with basic equipment artists such as crank Lucas are known for their minimal
recording setup but their high quality recordings. Major labels normally
rent out the best studios or in some cases even own them. The record label
would be in charge of booking studio time and making sure the studio fees are

management and digital rights

copyright management is a extremely important thing to have
in a record company to avoid any legal trouble. Well what is copy right? Allex
man (Regional Officer for the Musicians’ Union) says ‘Copyright is basically
the right to prevent copying of intellectual property – in this case music,
lyrics and sound recordings – so the copyright owner can protect their work and
control how it’s used” Copyright in a recording is slightly different in that
the owner of the recording is the person who arranges for the recording to be
made. Often this is whoever books and pays for the studio where the recording
takes place, so this could be a record company or it could be the band
themselves. This means that if a recording company books the recording
selection the label owns it.

music publishing

In the music industry, a music publisher is
responsible for ensuring the songwriters and composers receive payment when
their compositions are used commercially.

Promoting material

To become successful an artist must promote
them self so that they can be seen in the public eye. There are different ways
of promoting an artist one of the ways is going on tour. Syd Butler, leader of
the Les Savy Fav says that “it is an artists job to go on tour and the labels
job to  make sure the cd’s are in the stores”. Another person in the
promoting industry is Dera Shlton who works for Sony’s advertising section. She
encourages artists to start “promoting as soon as a budget is set” This strategy
is good because it gives fans as much time as possible to prepare, whether it
is a concert or an album fans know what is coming. Although this strategy is
effective, it isn’t the only way of marketing. Some artist use the mystery of
unexpected projects to get fans excited. for example not telling fans when an
album is due to be released but its coming out soon. Artists such as stormy
used this tactic in his recent album “gang signs and prayer” where he hated to
fans that he was due to release
an album a whole year before came out. A more notable artists  to take the surprise road is drake.Drake released
a his mixtape “if you’re reading this its too late” on February the 13th 2015
without any prior announcement. Despite the lack of publicity for this project
it still became extremely successful, breaking spotify streaming records by
getting over 17 million streams in the first 3 days. Although drake had a  lot
of success with this project Chris Farlry, the senior editor for the wall street
journal argues that “This strategy only works if you have a name so you can
cause anticipation” and it also helps if “you have a big enough following where
you can circumvent the big time media”

Copyright management

Is technology advances access to music from you’re
favriote artist has never been easier. However with the advance of technology
there is also an advance in how people can exploit it. One thing
that a lot of artists worry about is protection online. According to the I.A.A
the revenue of the music industry has deposed from 14billion dollars a year to
just 7 billion in under 20years , they blame this unbelievable decrease in
revenue on the growing population of music piracy. Music piracy has effected
the lives of a lot of musicians such as Modana. Modana was hacked had music
stolen from her devise. Music piracy is a big problem but what is the authority
doing to protect music ? The Recording Industry Association of America is a
trade organisation that represents the recording industry in the United
States there is also the British Phonographic Industry which is based in the uk. In
2014 alone the R.I.A.A sent out 20 million takedown notices of illegal music
downloading sites. Even though the music piracy business is despised my the majority
of artists a few people don’t mind the piracy and are even happy with it. One
of these people is multiplatinum star Ed Sheeran. In one of his interviews Ed
shows us his rise to fame and explains that he started of with people file
sharing his songs. This meant he wasn’t getting paid for the songs but he was
able to build a fanbase and have more people at his events when he performed.

Finding and selecting song writers

process of finding song writers is a very similar process to finding the artists.

Song writers will often send in videos or samples go their music to the music
publisher. if the publisher likes the music then the music the writer will be
on the publishers radar. Even though this method of getting signed is very
popular Emma
Kerr, Head of Promotion at Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers says Publishers
receive large numbers of approaches from composers. It is, in fact, rare for a
composer to be immediately signed to a publisher following such a submission.

Writers can also me scouted by making songs that are recognised by publishers,
often posting them to youtube or other social media sites where they are in the
public eye

Artist management

A artist or (talent) manager is an individual
or company who guides the professional career of artists in the music industry.

It is the managers job to handle the business Side of the music to allow the
artists to spend more time on their music. Managers may play a different role
depending on how big the record company actually is.

Managers in a small label may ware multiple
different hats including promoter, publicist, agent and manager. However a
manager in a big label would probably just focus on just managing them. Jeff
Dorenfeld who is a professor of music business/management describes a manager
as someone who can orchestrate the visions of the artists had help them achieve
their goals.

It may also fall upon the job of the artist
manager to handle any sponsorship deals
that the artists may be offered. An example of a sponsorship deal Is stormy’s
deal with Adidas. Rapper stormzy is often seen wearing
Adidas and talks about his relationship with Adidas in a number of songs. It
would be the job of stormzys manager to reach out to Adidas in the first place
and also keep relations with the company, as well as making sure his talent is
being paid the correct amount of money. Sponsorships are also very beneficial
to the artists. This is because the artist gains exposure to a wider audience.

The artist may also get free or discounted merchandise which can help a lot especially
if the sponsor provides a product that the artists uses often for example a
drummer being sponsored by zanhiser being provided with free sticks and cymbals.

In the end sponsorships help everyone The companies ad the artist. As Olivier Robert-Murphy, global head of new
business at Universal Music Group righty said “Brands are experiencing a
revolution in how consumers interact and
engage with them”.

All successful artists have some sort of
merchandise. Merchandise has become a vital part in todays music promoting
game. Jeff Dorenfeld compares merchandise to someone walking around with a
sandwich lord advertising your brand. Artists do make money off of
merchandise but most marketers say that making money is just a bonus but the
real upside is from people promoting your brand. typically merchandise is sold
in the same way. An artists will license their name to a merchandising
company for that a the artist would get a percentage of what ever the
merchandise sells, so normally the bigger the artists the bigger the
percentage. Although merchandise is a very successful business some artists
take more advantage of it than others. An example of an artist who focuses a
lot on merchandise is chance the rapper. Chance has done a great job in
promoting his merchandise. Chase is very rarely spotted without his famous hat.

This hat is sold on his website and it is one of his best selling products.

Tour management

A tour manager is the person who helps to
organise the administration for a schedule of appearances of a musical group or
artist at a sequence of venues.

Royalties are payments of various types to owners of property
for use of that property. In the music industry, royalties are paid to the
song to the songwriter of a song fir their use of their
compositions. when a record company presses a song the song writer would be
paid by a mechanical royalty system.
