SuperOxide be valuable in the fight to extend lifespan

SuperOxideDismutase, Sod2, reduces the amount of reactive oxygen species, ROS, present inthe mitochondria by converting superoxide to molecular oxygen and hydrogenperoxide (SGD). Increased amounts of ROS in the mitochondria causes DNA damage, thus affecting cellular functions leading to apoptosis. ROS has shown to impactaging; accumulation of DNA damage due to ROS can lead to age-related diseasesand increased aging (Melov).

Additionally, Sod2 levels vary with superoxidepresence; these variations have been shown to impact tumor cells (Skrzycki). The ability to manipulate Sod2would prove to be valuable in the fight to extend lifespan and surmount cancer.
