Sahr MbayoMs.BowmanHonors U.S. History Pd.31/16/18Babe Ruth     Babe Ruth was born February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, MD to  George Sr. and Kate. Babe Ruth had 8 brothers and sisters, even though him and his sister Mamie were the only ones who survived (“Babe Ruth Biography”). When Babe turned 7 years old his parents sent him to the St.

Mary’s Industrial School for Boys so he could stay out of trouble, and their he met Brother Matthias. Brother Matthias helped Babe become great at basketball, becoming his coach and working him constantly every day to get better. Babe came to a point where he was so good Brother Mathias invited the owner of the Baltimore Orioles Jack Dunn to watch him play. After watching him play for at least 30 minutes he offered him a MLB contract on February 1914. The first time the orioles players met Babe they called him “Jack’s newest babe” and that is how he got one of the most famous nicknames in sports history seeing (“Babe Ruth Biography”).After Jack Dunn brought Babe Ruth into the league he dominated. In 1920 beat the homerun record he set in 1919 by putting up an impressive 54 home runs, and this was in a season where no player hit more than 19 homers (Doutrich). But in the 1921 season was debatable one of the greatest baseball seasons ever.

In that season Babe set a new record of homeruns in a season to 59, had an RBI of 171, scored 177 runs, batted at a .376, and a very impressive .846 slugging percentage (“Babe Ruth Biography”). The 60 home runs he posted in 1927 was a record that wouldn’t be beat til 1961, that was nearly 30 years later. At the end of his career Babe Ruth had achieved a career total of 714 home runs.

This was a record that wouldn’t be broken till 1974, nearly 30 years later. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939 and was one of the first players ever(Pierce)..     Babe Ruth was an inspiration to everybody who watched him. He saved baseball from the disgusting Black Sox scandal, where players forfeited the 1919 World Series purposely. He also gave hope to people during the Great Depression, and became a symbol of prosperity to many(Doutrich). Till this day Babe ruth is what players measure themselves to be like, and even better than.

He was one of the first baseball players to be inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame, and set a home run record that wouldn’t be broke till 1974. The way he scored home runs so easy and efficiently led to a bunch of rule changes, and this is also put the skill of power hitting on a pedestal, and was a skill players acquired (Doutrich). He sculpted the world of sports , and baseball as it is is today which made him a cultural icon in many people’s eyes.
