Personal Statement—MSc in Contemporary Chinese Studies, Oxford Upon its foundation in 1949, following nearly a century’s ‘humiliation’ from the First Opium War to the World War II, People’s Republic of China remained impoverished, underdeveloped and self-seclusion. Until 1978, when reform and opening policy was implemented, China ushered in a fast-developing new era. From then on, the country has been going through a social-economic transformation, which has brought earthshaking advancements in China’s politics, economy, culture and society. In other words, China is rising sharply and gradually shows its irreplaceable position in international society and organization. This fact excites a number of Chinese people living abroad. Every time when China made great achievements in some area, they would be very proud as a Chinese, me included. Harboring passionate love for my great country and my intense curiosity of learning more deeply about my country (in economy, culture, politics, society, science and technology), I select to pursue my master degree in Contemporary Chinese Studies, expecting to deepen my own cognition of contemporary Chinese social phenomena to better serve for my country. Not a student with certain academic basis in this field, but I possess my own unique edge to study this program. As a native Chinese, I was born in China, growing up in China and spending most of my academic years in Chinese schools. The growing background has offered me a great convenience to familiarize myself with each aspect of contemporary China, including history, culture, politics, economy, international relations, religion, etc., which lays a solid foundation for me to transfer my study in this new learning area. What is more, my own thick interest in contemporary Chinese studies will guide me to better study this program. As the best teacher of everyone, interest can stimulate people to study spontaneously and put more energy into his/her favorite area. Obeying this belief, I received pretty good score in each of my favorite subjects, such as Chinese, History, Politics and Geography, from my primary school to my high school. In particular, I did very well in History, and thus far, I am still able to describe the developmental history of Chinese society from ancient times to contemporary era with ease while being asked. For the famous people and events in history, I could list them one by one in detail. Out of my strong love for Chinese literature, in the meantime, I read massive ancient and contemporary novels and proses, which bestowed me with deep cultural deposits. A multi-disciplined student as I am, it does not mean that my five years’ dabbling into undergraduate and graduate study is non-rewarding. Spurred by my initial interest in engineering, I embarked on my undergraduate study in Mechanical Engineering and Automation while being accepted by Wuhan University of Technology. There, I received the professional training in that subject and got my interest in how engineering is implemented and proceeded unlocked. Relying on my excellent academic performance, I won the school-level scholarship, which is rare among my classmates. After the completion of my undergraduate studies, I started my graduate study in National University of Singapore (NUS) so as to further reinforce my professional background, majoring in Computer Engineering. Through attending courses such as Neural Networks, Pattern Recognition, Magnetic Recording Technology, and Machine Vision, I had a clearer understanding of the combination of computer and engineering and mastered a series of computer programs and languages. Meanwhile, taking part in scientific researches helped me to reinforce knowledge in my major. Through the project named Pattern Recognition, I utilized algorithms such as K-NN, PCA and LDA and the technology of face recognition to successfully implement the classifying function and categorize fifty different people from thousands and thousands of images. In a research course of Neural Networks, I managed to use a universal approximation algorithm in image processing. Hard working and unremitting attitude won me a government grant and good grades in NUS. My strong learning ability in academics has fully been reflected in my past academic study, which will become my huge edge to continue an interdisciplinary study. ??????????????engineering????????????????? My practical application ability and ability to cooperate with others were also improved vastly via ample work experience. Before graduating from my graduate school, I had worked as the web developer and mechanical engineer in some technology companies, through which I preliminarily honed myself in practice and learned how my professional knowledge was applied in realistic work. After graduation, I successively involved myself into in ASM Technology Pte Ltd, Singapore and Seagate Technology International, Singapore. From Analyst Programmer to IT Developer to Software Engineer, I constantly promoted my professional skills and obtained fruitful work achievements in the field of website production, the design and development of application and the AI. In 2017, I succeeded in establishing my own company, Creative Soft, realizing my desire to start my own business, which gained me a tremendous sense of achievement. My innovative ability was developed wholly as well in the process of constantly throwing into the real-world work, which will be beneficial for my master study. With a long history and profound culture, University of Oxford is one of the oldest universities in the world, which owns top-notch academic research institutions and has already trained countless outstanding scientists who have made great contributions to the progress of society. I believe that a school with such academic strength is extremely attractive to any students, including me. Not only does your MSc Contemporary Chinese Studies program put much emphasis on deepening students’ understanding of contemporary China in its various areas, you also focus on cultivating students’ ability to use multiple research methods to study Chinese social issues and phenomena. Both of your emphasis in the two aspects attracts me for deep study. Moreover, your one-to-one teaching feature will be helpful for me to understand thoroughly each knowledge point I hope to dabble into. I thus deem your school as my best learning destination. Under the cultivation of your dense academic atmosphere and strong faculty, I hope I can deepen my study and research in contemporary China. After graduation, I plan to further pursue my PhD degree in the field of Chinese study either in Oxford or China. While receiving the PhD degree, I intend to enter a college to specialize my research in this learning direction, hoping to score an achievement in this research area. Your favorable consideration will be highly appreciated. Thanks!
