One the other hand, there are many other people

One of the most important women’s daily activities to show their beauties is makeup.

There are many arguing beliefs about the necessity of makeup and invasive cosmetic procedures or surgeries. On the one hand, there are many people who believe that the natural beauty is the best and we shouldn’t change or modify our natural creation. On the other hand, there are many other people who believe that we should use cosmetics like makeup or procedures like surgeries to make us more attractive and beautiful. In this essay, we understand two points of view about the use of cosmetics. These two articles are not necessarily against each other and maybe both have aligned thoughts about the need of cosmetics but their point of view is different and completely against each other.

The reason of choosing these two articles is because I wanted to get information about analyzing the advantage of beauty products use that it is obvious in one of them and in the other source it discusses disadvantages and negative aspects of using makeup.  The first article title is “Why Cosmetics Work”. The author is Richard Russell from Harvard University. He is a perceptual psychologist and now he works as associate professor at the Gettysburg College.

He specifically has researched about “the development of a biologically based account of makeup and other techniques of personal decoration”. His background makes his writings reliable. The second one is a magazine article with the title of “The Cost of Beauty – The Harmful Effects of Makeup on Your Skin”. The writer is Marvi Masud who is a medical school student and author of The Express Tribune magazine.Richard Russell in his article tells the history about the use of makeup and decorative cosmetics in the human that dates back more than 75000 years ago. Explorer reviews from early human shows they were using some kinds of color to cover their body and also to make them beautiful even before discovering and using clothes.

Actually, he is trying to say there has been certainly a hidden necessity behind the use of cosmetics in the human during the long history of using cosmetics. In another word, there is a universal need in the human to change their appearance with the art of using cosmetics. The definition of beauty varies and it is relative depending on our beliefs.

Our beliefs form in accordance with the culture and the social conditions. The common concept of the beauty is the state of the outstanding pleasure of our souls. It is the state of proud and peaceful feeling about ourselves. It seems that there is a need to express our beauty in both unconscious and conscious of the human. According to Russell, they have been many movements and oppositions against the use of cosmetics and makeup. The religion thoughts and strict rules in some countries during different periods have banned the use of cosmetics but they never succeed in their prohibition. In addition, when there is a forbiddance for a subject, it can create a desire to obtain it.

I think in the Islamic countries where the women should wear hijab, they express their beauty by use of heavy face makeup.   In opposite thought the use of cosmetics is harmful. Masud argues that makeup can cause multiple health issues that they are not limited to skin diseases. She explains the side effects of using cosmetics as the health costs. Her opinion is that many cosmetics like lipsticks have negative effects on the health.

This idea is supported by many types of research showing that lead is “carcinogen and neurotoxin that can affect the nervous system adversely, leading to high blood pressure, allergies, behavioral abnormalities and even decreased rates of fertility!” (Masud). According to a dermatologist, the use of makeup is the main cause of acne in more than 30% of their patients. It is often said that makeup damaging effect on the skin is an important cause of dermal aging process. You would think that more wrinkles and lines could appear on your face when using too much makeup and I say your thought is absolutely right. These wrinkles often are seen in actors and actresses who usually have heavy makeup. There is no doubt that the cosmetics seller companies nowadays turning into huge businesses and in the business, the first goal is making money. It is often said that some companies try to make more money by using cheap materials in their products.

I’ve always believed that famous and reliable cosmetic companies do not destroy their reputation and they can make more money when the people trust them and then they buy their products for a longer time. On the other hand, the increasing competition among companies to keep their customers satisfied cause companies to use high-quality ingredients in their products. The truth is the standards, regulations, and new methods of cosmetic production have prevented side effects more than before. The analyses of two opposite articles reveal many facts.

The use of cosmetics and beauty products is a need that had been with the human for thousands of years. Use of these products can cause serious health issues in the human. The question is: how can we use these products and avoid their negative effects at the same time? Use of products from famous brands that have a good reputation, avoid from heavy makeup, and raising the awareness of the society can be helpful. Works Cited          Masud, Marvi. “The Cost of Beauty – The Harmful Effects of Makeup on Your Skin.” The Express Tribune, 13 Nov.
