Kimberly Brown- Intro to Anthropology Multicultural Education in America In this world there is no individual exactly the same. Many Individuals can share many similarities with one another. However we are our own person who have our own personality, ancestry, values, and beliefs. America is like a melting pot, there are different types of people that inhabit this country. Melting pot meaning it’s an multiculturalism country with diversity. What is Multicultural Education? Has America got this type of education down and correctly? What are the Pros and Cons? It is important in American that people are taught to interact, learn and grow with people of different races, ethnicities, and cultures.”Here is not merely a nation but a teeming nation of nations.” (Preface to Leaves of Grass, Wm. Benton.)The concept that education and instruction can be made for the cultures of many different ethnicities in an system seems very much Ideal. Making sure cultural understanding is established consciously and unconsciously will build respect for one another, and develop cultural pluralism in society would be Ideal. Multicultural education should acknowledge and promote structural positive cultural characteristics into classrooms. In America for many years assimilation took place and it will take much more time for diversity to change views. “An important part of any nation’ s cultural and social life is the way its citizens conceive of themselves.” (To Be an American: Cultural Pluralism and the Rhetoric of Assimilation. Hing, Bill Ong.) Pros of Multicultural Education is the demographic transformation is more on the rise for the America helping more individual comfortable around each other. Also there are now more institutions willing and able to help minorities succeed. “Not all children are equally ready to learn when they enter kindergarten. For those who start out behind—and that often includes low-income and minority children—it can be difficult indeed to catch up. In response, many states have initiated prekindergarten programs to promote school readiness and close achievement gaps.” (The United States of Education: The Changing Demographics of the United States and Their Schools. Crouch, Ron)Indicated in research most ethnic minority students are poor, dropping out of school, usually suspended or expelled from school, and performing far below their potential. Not enough teachers are prepared for the challenge of conversing and connecting with different races, this is where improvement is most needed. Additional pros to Multicultural education is downsizing of fear, unawareness, and personal bias are beneficial.Multiculturalism is complex because there will always be social standards in play to work against the potential. Also there are debates that multiculturalism does not help narrow perceptions and stereotypes instead reinforce them which is a Con in a sense. The mixing of cultures and ethnicities is not impossible, we are faced with the issue of inequality in the education system as a whole. It is possible to achieve a better multicultural education system, there just need to be more equality as a nation. We can not teach the nation in pieces where diversity lives most but educating places that do not have diversity also and integrating these places as well. In addition this is still a work in progress that has come along way.
