Hiatt English 10 6th hour08 January 2018 Book Review Imagine having a life as a sixteen year old girl with thyroid cancer that has progressed into your lungs and having to lug around an oxygen tank wherever you go. In The Fault of our Stars By John Green, Hazel Grace Lancaster has to. This book is a young adult fiction and is a read. Readers should be interested in this book because out of all the bad odds going towards these two young people they still find love in the end. Hazel Grace Lancaster was diagnosed with thyroid cancer when she was 13 years old. Hazel had a 1 out of 5 chance of survival when diagnosed but she is sixteen now beating the odds. Her thyroid cancer progressed into her lungs making it very hard for her to breathe.
Hazel now has to carry a oxygen tank with her all the time to be able to breathe properly. Augustus Water or Gus is seventeen year old and was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Osteosarcoma is a malignant tumor of bone in which there is a proliferation of osteoblasts.
Augustus osteosarcoma made him have to lose his right leg and now had a prosthetic. Hazel and Augustus met at the end of a support meeting for cancer. Augustus was there to support his friend Isaac. Isaac is getting his only remaining eye removed because of cancer. Hazel is forced to go to this meeting by her parents. Hazel begins to yell at Augustus when she sees him put a cigarette in between his lips and says, “Not being able to breathe sucks .
“( Page 20.) Augustus tells her shortly after,”It’s a metaphor, see: You put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don’t give it the power to do its killing.” (page 20) Hazel never thought of that and is very impressed. Augustus later invites Hazel to go to his house to watch a movie. Augustus makes a plan to surprise Hazel to go see her favorite author in Amsterdam with the money from the Wish foundation. Hazel’s doctor recommended her not to go but she went anyways. Hazel was very sad and mad when she got to Amsterdam because she found out that her favorite author was just a mean drunk.
Van Houten lashes out on them and starts insulting and making fun of Hazel and her cancer. They later found out that his assistant was the one that made the meeting and not Van Houten. The assistant shows them around amsterdam later because she feels very bad for what he did. Even though you think you have the worst odds good things will come your way and you might find love. I think readers should read this book because they should live in the moment.
Have as much fun as you can because you never know when it will be your day. This was a very interesting book and kept you on your toes the whole time.
