This problem has been ineffect for a long time and scientists are figuring out new ways to grow plantsefficiently. Doing this will grow enough food for all the people in the worldand reduce the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
One of the many waysthat we can grow plants efficiently is hydroponics. Hydroponics is growingplants without the use of soil, and this allows plants to grow without anyland. Another example is growing plants under LED lights. LED’s are proven tobe the most efficient way to grow plants in terms of speed. One more example isgrowing plants with genetics. Scientists who grow plants using genetics finddifferent types of genes inside of the plants and “activate” them. This makesthe plant grow fast.
Scientists want to get rid of carbon dioxide in the airand to get more food for the world. Hydroponics 100 years ago, a student namedWilliam Frederick Gericke popularized the idea that plants could be grown in asolution of nutrients and water instead of soil. He grew 25 foot high tomatovines using only water and nutrients and called this method hydroponics. (EpicGardening, 2011) Hydroponics is a system used for growing plants without soiland substituting it for water. There are good things that come out ofhydroponics such as: increased productivity and Eco – Friendliness.
Hydroponicsincrease productivity because layers of plants can be grown in the same place.Hydroponics is Eco Friendly because it conserves water. (Big Picture Education,2016) Scientists and growers put nutrients inside the water being used to growthe plant. Now that hydroponics is possible, people can grow many plants in thesame space.
Countries like India and Japan that suffer from not enough farmland may benefit from this technology LightEmitting Diodes (LED’s) LED’sare light bulbs that shine very brightly and are power efficient. People useLED’s mostly for light bulbs but scientists have experimented with them andhave used them to grow plants. LED’s developed by General Electric weredesigned to produce the best wavelength of light that plants need. Anexperiment conducted by Shigeharu Shimamura using those same bulbs resulted inaccelerating plant growth by 250%. LED’s also cut product waste by 50%,productivity has increased a lot more, and water usage has been cut to just onepercent. (Taratola, 2014) LED’s are one of the best methods for plant growthbecause it is proven that the wavelength of LED’s are more efficient than thoseof the sun. They are also more efficient because unlike the sun they are alwayson. Farmers that controls LED’s don’t have to worry about bad weather such asrain and they don’t have to worry about not getting enough light because theycontrol their light source now.
Genetics Scientists have recently discoveredthat they can change plants using genetics. At the university of Warwick,students discovered plants of natural ability to regulate their growthindependently. Inside of a plant they were studying they found a modifierprotein called SUMO. By modifying the interaction between the modifier proteinand repressor proteins, they can let the plant go free, and make it grow fasterand higher. If farmers keep the crops growing and are faced by toughconditions, it could give them more sustainable crops. Dr. Ari Sanandom saidSUMO could be important in crop production.
(Durham University, 2014) Anotherresearch group identified plant – growth gene called Purple Acid Phosphate 2,AKA AtPAP2. This growth gene modulates the import of a number of specificproteins. The researchers made the gene active on the chloroplast and themitochondria, which boosts their capability to harvest energy.
(University ofHong Kong, 2016) Farmers would be the ones to use this technology. Althoughthey may not have more space, they can use the technology to make the plantsbigger on the space that they have. Conclusion All of these methods are very usefulin meeting their goal of reducing carbon dioxide in the air and not havingenough food for the population.
