Go with the windWhat are wind turbines?:The simple and complete definition of those machines is this one:a turbine having a large vaned wheel rotated by the wind to generate electricity.A wind turbine is a machine that transforms the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical or electrical energy. Wind turbines consist of a foundation, a tower, a nacelle and a rotor. The foundation prevents the turbine from falling over. The tower holds up the rotor and a nacelle (or box). These are made to get and collect as much energy as they can from the wind, which is a renewable fuel. In France we can see a plenty and a big number of those machines in the countryside when you pass by them in the train. What does the energy of the wind depends on:As you can see on this formula, this is the main wind energy formula and is calculated like this. As you understand the wind is the main part of the wind turbine. But the turbine has also other main parts. The Formula is Wind= ½ xP(air density)xA(the entire area and the parkour that the turbine has to take to do a complete circle=Pi2)xV(Wind speed or velocity which will be cubed). How does the technology actually takes in the wind:Well as you have all seen the wind make the tree blades of the wind turbines either move or rotate in an exactly same way. Those three blades make work the motor and rotor which is situated in the machine. The motor and rotor are then connected to a canal called a schaftand this shaft is used to make a generator which creates energy and this actually creates kinetic energy. This is only for one wind turbine. In generale, A 10-kW wind turbine can generate about 16,000 kWh annually for only one wind turbine. Usually we find a few of them all built in the middle of farms.Limitations and benefits (impacts Social/Economic/Environment)LimitationsBenefitsWind is a fluctuating (intermittent) source of energy and is not suited to meet the base load energy demand unless some form of energy storage is utilized (e.g. batteries, pumped hydro). It takes free and renewable energy without wasting or being for this type of energy to run out.The manufacture and the installation of those massive infrastructure are expensive and long. The potential of wind power is enormous – 20 times more than what the entire human population needsThreat to the wildlife (birds)They distribute and collect a lot of energy compared to other energy materials (600 homes)The aesthetic and the sound and noise of the wind turbines is really not good and very annoying and disturbing.Every Year the wind energy is used 25% more that the year beforeWhen one wind turbine is broken, it either has to be broken down(which pollutes) or repaired (take a awful lot of time)Price decrease every yearN/AGood domestic potential: Residential wind turbines yields energy savings and protects homeowners from power outages.I will know show you the upgrade that those machines have done during the time that they have been invented: You can see how much more efficient and easy it to obtain wind energy.Bibliography: Ewea.org.
