For most Americans, there is a high possibility that they have been living their whole lives in a place that is continually getting dangerously unstable, hotter, flatter and crowded. For example, the planet is continually heating up from around 1.1 to 1.
6 degrees Fahrenheit from the North Pole to the South Pole. As a matter of fact, glaciers, frozen ice on the sea and a change of patterns in precipitation are just a few results of what is now known as “global warming”. As a result, the rise in temperatures are making hurricanes and various other storms stronger and floods and droughts more common. There must be an unfolding to this problem and Thomas Friedman (2008), author of the book HOT, FLAT, AND CROWDED: WHY WE NEED A GREEN REVOLUTION AND HOW IT CAN RENEW AMERICA aims to find it. Friedman believes that a major action that America can do to revive itself and combat global warming is to simply begin by paying attention to nature. When people ignore something or someone that is good, neglect can ring in. Friedman states,”At the end of the day, no amount of investing, no amount of clean electrons, no amount of energy efficiency will save the natural world if we are not paying attention to it..
.” Paying attention to nature not only helps people feel better, it also helps them behave better and really appreciate it. Case in point, research suggests that nature can increase or decrease stress levels dependent on whether the environment is pleasant or not. Therefore, if the environment is in bad condition and having major issues, so will the people who live in it. If it is well taken care of and healthy, so are the people who live in it. The hope is that when people begin to pay attention to nature, they will see how beautiful and generous it can be and begin to make better choices. Friedman states, “.
..if we are not paying attention to all the things that nature give us for free: clean air, clean water, breathtaking vistas, mountains for skiing, rivers for fishing, oceans for sailing, sunsets for poets, and landscapes for painters.
What good is it to have wind-powered lights to brighten the night if you can’t see anything green during the day?”. Trees are one of the main things people in nature because places like forests covers almost one third of the Earth’s surface. Because they are home to many plants, animals and provide food, fuel, and medicine it is important that better choices are made to preserve them. Paying attention to trees will cause people to make better choices such as reusing paper, using cloth napkins and even a reusable water bottle. As younger kids people are typically were taught to take care of our environment so it can be sustainable for future generations. This trend must continue on throughout until adulthood. Actions like saving water by taking shorter showers, and turning off the tap while brushing teeth are still relevant and combats global warming.
The reason being is because water efficiency saves energy which helps fight against global warming. In closing it is important to note that what people do today will affect others tomorrow. Friedman states, “Sustainability is today’s freedom crusade, because the next generation will not live free—will not have the freedom to pursue its economic dreams or to delight in all that nature has to offer—if our approach to the financial world and the natural are not grounded in sustainable values.”. If people don’t prepare ourselves in a substantial way then the earth won’t be prepared for the future.
Sustaining the environment can be used in many ways if all people will get involved with it. The world needs to wake up and be aware of the changes that are happening to our earth.
