Distracted driving July 21, 2015, a 17-year-old teenager, Carlee Rose Bollig, ran a red light at an intersection in Minnesota. A dad, Charles Mauer, and his 10-year-old daughter, Cassy, were heading home from a library when the pickup truck smashed into their car. This all would not have happened if Carlee Rose Bollig was NOT texting while driving. This is just one story of people who died because someone was distracted while driving.
I am against distracted driving because it has taken lives of people who did not deserve it. Distracted driving is a serious problem. In 2015 alone 3,477 were people were killed by people who were distracted while driving. In 2016 37,461 lives were lost to people who were texting while driving. That is an increase of 5.6%. There are three types of distracted driving they are visual distraction, manual distraction, and cognitive distraction.The first type of distraction is visual distraction.
Some visual things you could be doing that are distracting are Looking for items on the floor of the car, Checking and adjusting the GPS, Changing the radio station, or Adjusting your temperature in the car.The next type of distraction there is, is Manual Distraction. Manual distractions are things like Eating food while you are driving, or Adjusting your seat belt, you can also be searching through your purse or wallet and turning knobs in your car. The last type of distraction there is, is Cognitive distraction. Now cognitive distraction is different from the rest of types of distraction because it is something you brain handles.
This is things like keeping your eyes on the road, or making sure you don’t lose your temper, you could be talking to another passenger, Thinking about something that has nothing to do with driving, or daydreaming. These are tips that you can remind your parents about so they drive distraction-free:The first on is Stay calm. Anxiety and stress can be a big distraction. Take deep breaths and keep your focus on the road. Next, we have to Pullover. If, for whatever reason, you can’t seem to keep your focus, find a safe place to pull over and take a break. Another one is Keep the peace.
Driving is not the time for arguments, which can be distracting. Save the fight for when you are at home or you have parked the car somewhere safe. You can also Use your passengers. When possible, put your passenger in charge of tasks like temperature control or changing the music. You also need to Know your dials.
This is especially important when you are driving a new car, or a car you are not used to driving. Get to know the car’s controls BEFORE you start driving. This will help minimize distractions in cases where you must use one of the car’s controls. Another tip is to Use your radio presets.
Most car stereos allow you to preset stations so that you only have to press one button to hear what you want. You can Make adjustments before you start driving. These include: Mirrors. Seat. Steering wheel. You have to Stay off your phone. Cell phone use, whether for texting or talking, is a huge distraction. Put your phone away, and do not let yourself use it until you are out of your car.
There are even some smartphone apps that will help keep you from driving distracted. You have to Be rested and satisfied. If you are going for a long trip, make sure you have had plenty of rest, food, and drink. Remember you have to factor meal times into your schedule so that you don’t feel pressured into eating while driving to make it to your destination on time. The last thing you can remind your parents about is that you should Set up your GPS before you start driving. When you are driving on the road it is already hard enough. So you should get everything set up so then you and your parents don’t have to deal with the stress of doing this on the road.
