Benedict Arnold was born on January 14th, 1741 the second of six children. When he was still young four of his siblings died of yellow fever.
After the other four children died Arnold and his sister Hannah named after her mom were taken out of their private school and went to live with their aunt and uncle because their parent had no money left after trying to save their children’s life. In 1759 Arnold’s mom died and just two years later so did his dad. From a young age Benedict Arnold know he wanted to help in a war. As a child Arnold ran away twice to go fight with a colonie in the French and Indian War. When Arnold was 21 he moved away from this aunt and uncle and lived in Norwich, Connecticut and became a Connecticut militia. When Arnold was 26 he married Margaret Mansfield and had three sons.
In 1775 Margaret Mansfield died. In 1777 Arnold became a major general in the Revolutionary War. In 1779 Arnold married Peggy Shippen and had four sons and one daughter. Arnold, his wife, and seven children lived lavishly and soon found themselves badly pressed for money. After that Arnold’s only live sibling Hannah became his assistant and lived with Arnold and his family. Then Arnold became a major general and him and his man went to the Battle of Lexington. After the battle Arnold and his men wanted to capture Fort Ticonderoga. Ethan Allen and his men also wanted to capture Fort Ticonderoga.
So the two groups met up with each other at Bennington, Vermont and came up with a plan. After the meating Arnold and Allen and their men worked together to capture Fort Ticonderoga. Then Arnold and Allen and their men worked together two more times to also captured Trisha Lou and Lake Champion. After that Arnold and his men tried to capture the fort at west point without the help of Allen some think this was going to be his first act of treason and surrender the fort at west point to British if he would have succeeded but he didn’t.
Then Arnold and Washington went to the city of Quebec where he suffered a leg wound on the battlefield but got a battlefield promotion in recognition of his great courage in the face of danger. After this some people though he was going to surrender Washington to British but he didn’t. Then Arnold fought in the Battle of Saratoga and got a leg injury that would make his leg forever crippled. Than Washington found the letters for the British to Arnold he realized that Arnold had deeply betrayed him. Once Arnold found out that Washington knew about the letters Arnold fled to the welcoming arms of the British but he was not fully on the side of the British but later on would be.
After failing to capture Arnold, Washington was so surprised that Arnold had betrayed him he said to his men “Arnold has betrayed all of us whom can we possibly trust now.” After this Arnold and his wife Peggy Shipped started communicating with the British Government and figuring out terms of them switching side to being on the side with the British. This act of such betrayal deeply hurt and surprised all of the Americans. Most of the Generals in the Continental army and even the President were writing letters of hate and how Arnold had betrayed them to each other. After this Arnold’s day would be filled with the most profound hatred and the reminder of how much betrayed them.
Even though Arnold deeply betrayed the Connecticut Army there are still monuments all over for him. Some even say without him we would have lost the war.
