Basics of companies or employers bent upon using LinkedIn

                         Basics of LinkedInand what it stands for            Inthe world of fast-paced business and rapid technological advancements, businesses,organizations, governments, colleges, and universities network and formlong-term professional relationships using online media networks. One suchsocial media network is LinkedIn, whose vision is to “Create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforcethrough the ongoing development of the world’s first Economic Graph”(About Us, 2017). It has been found that online recommendations provide a greatimpetus for our world’s economy to grow and nurture itself, and numerousexamples of this includes booking a holiday using TripAdvisor, buying a productfrom Amazon after reading and analyzing the recommendations, and ordering anUber taxi after reading the driver’s ratings and recommendations (S-W, 2015). Inrecent years, the number of companies or employers bent upon using LinkedInprofiles to replace the traditional resumes or recommendation letters has beenon the rise (S-W, 2015).

This even relates to the value of LinkedIn sincestudents and graduates look forward to using it more to showcase their skillsand to connect to professionals in the industry.            Theoriginal aim of LinkedIn was with the “aim oflinking employers with potential employees, providing a place for individualsto post resumes and offer referrals and for employers to post current jobopenings” (Sisson, 2013). LinkedIn has also become more diversified interms of collecting revenues from areas such as advertising sales, membershipsubscriptions, and recruitment solutions (About Us, 2017). LinkedIn has becomemore selective in terms of letting people and organizations into each one’sprofile and it does not rely on the traditional “more is better approach” ofmany organizations (Sisson, 2013).It has evolvedinto a more robust networking tool that enables companies including those inthe business-to-business (B2B) arena (Sisson, 2013).

LinkedIn helps “organizationsto grow their customer bases, generate productand service ideas, and gain valuable feedback from the people they want most tohear from: potential clients” (Sisson, 2013). It is for these reasonsthat understanding and analyzing LinkedIn profiles is necessary so that a good basefor marketing oneself in the professional networks is created. Criteria forcomparison            Inthis project, I have decided to compare and contrast my LinkedIn profile withthat of Ms.

Michelle Wardman, an English Language Professor at AlgonquinCollege. She has over five hundred connections and operates from the Ottawaarea in Canada. I, Mohammed Alharbi is a student at Algonquin College ofApplied Arts and Technology, and is based out of Nepean, Ottawa area in Canada.Being related to the same organization, I take great pleasure in comparing myprofile with the of the esteemed Ms. Wardman, who has over fifteen hundredhours of post-secondary teaching experience at Carleton University andcontinues to provide her pedagogic skills to numerous students (Wardman, n.

d).So, for doing theprocess of comparison, I would like to use three criteria that I feel explainthe basic ideas and the most intricate aspects of a LinkedIn profile. Thesecriteria for comparison include introduction section about eachindividual, experience in terms of professional work, and featuredskills and endorsements section.

In choose these three criteria as theyprovide the most reasonable comparison for this sort of analysis. Theintroduction tells someone what kind of professional and person they are, theexperiences inform the networks about what the individuals have accomplished andwhat they are capable of, and the skills and endorsements section provideinformation on how people in the LinkedIn network perceive the abilities of theindividuals.Comparison andContrast            Theprimary criterion that I have chosen to describe and explain about eachindividual from a LinkedIn profile is the introduction or about me section.This section is repeatedly listed among the nine essential or necessarysections on any LinkedIn profile to increase their professional reach andbuilding better networks (Rose, 2016). The summary or the introduction isconsidered to be one the major highlights of a LinkedIn profile and one thatgets the users greater attention and gives potential hiring managers a reasonto go through their full profile (Rose, 2016).My profile ispretty straight forward, and it directly lists the roles and responsibilitiesthat I have undertaken in the Financial Administration Department, with aslight explanation for my career so far.

It goes as follows: “I have completed a training program that offered bythe Asascome Real Estate Company for three years. I worked in the FinancialAdministration department. My responsibilities include create and keep upmonetary bookkeeping frameworks for money administration, creditor liabilities,records of sales. Prepare periodic reports on the work of the section. dealingwith the payment of security subscriptions on time” (Alharbi, n.

d). Thesummary does not provide any specific detail on what kind of person I am, nordoes it provide any keywords on how I can add value to the positions that Icould be offering in the professional workplaces.When I compare myprofile with Wardman’s, I find that her profile exudes a sense of belief in theindividual and provides for a glimpse and peek into the person that she is. Itgives a lot of detail into the person she is, in addition to scanning thecareer paths that she has taken and the various responsibilities that she hascompleted.

For example, some statements from her introduction include “I am passionate about teaching English and take greatpride in creating course content that is accessible to all adult learners,engaging and relevant to their lives. I am a seasoned English language teachingprofessional and have 18 years experience in the field”, and a glimpseof her specialties as “Specialties: teachingfirst-year English/Communications courses, English for Academic Purposes (EAP)and advanced level ESL; mentoring new teachers; public speaking at conferencesand community events” (Wardman, n. d). Thus, Wardman’s use of languageis more on point, and it uses keywords to capture the attention of the readerthrough a good impression.The secondcriterion that I would like to use to compare the two LinkedIn profiles is theexperience that both of them have provided.

I have provided two workexperiences in the section, where one of them is an Accountant at Asascome RealEstate Company in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the other is that of Supervisor atAsascome Real Estate Company in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (Alharbi, n. d). The firstposition was held for over three years, while the second for over eight years(Alharbi, n. d). Both these positions have been completed outside Canada, andrequire that I work through them meticulously and thoughtfully. I have toprovide greater detail in terms of content and include more on theresponsibilities that were given to me and the tasks that I have completed overthe period of time.

            Onthe other hand, when I visit Wardman’s profile, I find that it contains twelvedistinct and important positions that she has held over the period of timestarting from June of 1999 up until the current date (Wardman, n. d). One ofthe positions that caught my attention is that of an ESL Writing WorkshopFacilitator for the University of Ottawa, OLBI Department. It reads as follows,”Designed a five-week intensive writing coursefor Explore adult ESL learners; Developedand delivered all course materials while following university curriculumguidelines; marked assignments and submitted final grades; and Oversaw thecreation and management of Exploring Voice, a student-generated weekly ESLnewsletter” (Wardman, n. d). The above description is very terse butdoes not leave out any essential information on the nature of what the jobrequired her to do, or how she accomplished those tasks.            Asimilar description of the way she handled making use of technology to completeher tasks in her current role as English Language Professor at AlgonquinCollege. The description is very sound and provides a way for the readers tounderstand what she can do and how she innovates at her workplace.

It goes asfollows: “Using different forms of technologyand online resources, such as Skype, Instagram, TED Talks, PowerPoint andCamtasia Relay to make course content engaging and accessible to all learners;and Creating my own images and videos using a Samsung smart phone as well as aJVC Everio HD Camcorder in order to engage students and make direct links tocourse content in every photo/video” (Wardman, n. d). Thus, she providesthe most creative and necessary description of the tasks, which I could use toimprove my own profile.            Thethird criteria for comparison is the featured skills and endorsements section. Theskills provided in my profile includes Microsoft Office, SAP, Database, MSAccess, Java, HTML, and SQL (Alharbi, n. d). There are no endorsements to theseskills, however, and this does not add to the value of the profile (Alharbi, n.d).

On the other hand, Wardman’s profile contains twenty-two skills and many ofthem have endorsements (Wardman, n. d). The top three skills include Teachingwith 26 endorsements, Adult Education with 26 endorsements, and HigherEducation with 22 endorsements (Wardman, n. d). Some of the endorsements comefrom highly skilled individuals in the industry and this provides a morecomplete recognition of Wardman’s skills, which my LinkedIn profile lacks butrequires.

 Concluding remarks            Ineffect, when I compare my LinkedIn profile with that of Professor Wardman’s, Ifind that the Professor’s profile is much more professional, and it is moreorganized than mine. As a result, the assignment of comparing and contrastingmy profile with hers leads to a process of investigating how well I can improvemyself on the LinkedIn profile by adding more content and becoming moreproactive in obtaining links and endorsements to market myself better. Wardman’sassorted list of expertise is the result of culmination of years of teachingand holding other positions in various government and private organizations.

Ican learn from her expertise, and by reading through her profile I find thather introduction does an excellent job of exposing her to the reader andLinkedIn professionals. By increasing the depth of content for each experiencethat I have completed, I can add value to my profile and improve my ability tocreate better professional connections and even find a job that suits myprofile. References Used About Us.
